FASTag Toll Rates Drop By 50% For Certain Highways – Who Benefits And How? Details Inside
Highway travel across India has become more affordable following a major decision by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to reduce toll rates by up to 50% on stretches that include key structures such as bridges, tunnels, flyovers, and elevated corridors. Announced on July 2, 2025, the reform comes through amendments to the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, and introduces a new formula for toll calculation that favors commuters.
Under the updated rules, tolls for structured sections of highways will now be based on whichever is lower:
- Ten times the length of the structure(s) plus the standard toll for the remaining stretch, or
- Five times the total length of the entire highway section, including the structures.
-

For instance, if a 40 km highway stretch is entirely made up of structured infrastructure, the earlier toll formula calculated it as 400 km (10 × 40 km). With the new rule, it will be treated as 200 km (5 × 40 km), effectively reducing toll charges by half. This move especially benefits areas where structures form a large part of the route.
Major Boost for Commercial and Frequent Highway Users
The reform is expected to greatly benefit both private and commercial vehicle users. Commercial vehicles, which typically pay four to five times the toll of private cars, will enjoy considerable savings under the new toll structure.
Private vehicle owners now have the option to purchase an annual toll pass for ₹3,000, providing extra relief to regular commuters by reducing the cost of frequent highway travel.
The policy is designed to balance cost recovery for high-maintenance infrastructure while ensuring fair pricing for users. It is anticipated to promote greater usage of the national highway network, lower travel costs, and improve the overall efficiency and accessibility of road transport throughout the country.
