The Protest So Far: Key Developments

Farmers to Resume March Today

On Friday, December 6, a group of 101 farmers began their march from the Shambhu border but were stopped by multilayered barricades erected by Haryana security forces.

Following injuries caused by tear gas shelling during Friday's march, the farmers decided to pause their protest for the day.
Undeterred, farmer leaders have announced a fresh march at 12 noon today if their demands remain unaddressed by the government, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Demands at the Forefront

Farmers under the banners of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha are rallying for:

  • Legal Guarantee for MSP: Assurance of fair crop prices.
  • Farm Loan Waivers: Immediate relief from mounting debt burdens.
  • Pensions for Farmers and Labourers: Ensuring financial security for aging agricultural workers.
  • Withdrawal of Police Cases: Dropping charges filed during previous farmer protests.
  • Justice for Lakhimpur Kheri Victims: Resolution of issues stemming from the 2021 violence.
  • No Hike in Electricity Tariffs: Protection from increased costs impacting farmers.

Tensions at the Punjab-Haryana Border

Security Clampdown

Anticipating intensified protests, Haryana authorities have suspended mobile internet and bulk SMS services in 11 villages of Ambala district, including Dangdehri, Lohgarh, and Sultanpur, until December 9.
Security personnel remain on high alert, with multilayered barricades still in place to prevent the farmers from advancing.

Friday's Clash

Tear gas shelling by police on December 6 left several farmers injured, forcing them to halt their march.
Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher criticized the heavy-handed approach, asserting that the movement will continue until their demands are met.

Voices from the Frontlines

"We will wait until December 7 for talks with the government. If no dialogue occurs, 101 farmers, ready to sacrifice everything, will march towards Delhi on December 8 at 12 noon," said Pandher.

The farmers, many of whom have been camping at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points since February, remain resolute in their pursuit of justice and reforms.

A Protest Rekindled

The current movement mirrors the 2021 farmer protests, which saw prolonged agitation and ultimately led to the repeal of contentious farm laws, as per media reports. This time, the demands center around securing long-term economic stability and justice for the farming community.

As the nation watches, today's events will determine whether the government opens a dialogue or the farmers intensify their march towards Delhi.
