Fake Encounter: Congress Slams Yogi Govt On Bahraich Incident

The Congress party has challenged the authenticity of the Bahraich encounter, asserting that the incident is a manifestation of the Uttar Pradesh government's inefficiency.

The party's leaders argue that the encounter, which resulted in Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib being shot in the legs by Uttar Pradesh Police during their alleged escape attempt to Nepal, is part of a broader pattern of "fake encounters" aimed at deflecting from the state's administrative failures. UP Congress President Ajay Rai criticized the state's long history of conducting such operations, accusing them of masking their shortcomings.

In response to the incident, Congress MP Imran Masood emphasized the importance of accountability for those who committed acts of violence and disrespect against women during the turmoil.

He stressed that the culprits, irrespective of their religion, who engaged in arson and inappropriate behaviour should be duly punished. This sentiment reflects a broader concern within the Congress party regarding the state's approach to handling civil unrest and crime.

Avinash Pandey, another Congress leader, pointed out the regularity with which encounters are happening in Uttar Pradesh, labeling the situation in Bahraich as regrettable. He underscored the responsibility of the administration to ensure peace is restored.

Similarly, Aradhana Misra-Mona lamented the missed opportunity to prevent the Bahraich incident, attributing it to a lack of foresight and preparedness by the government and administrative bodies. These critiques highlight a perceived systemic failure at both the government and administrative levels in preempting and managing violent incidents.

Samajwadi Party leader Ravidas Mehrotra also criticized the Uttar Pradesh government and administration for their failure to prevent the violence in Bahraich. He described a scenario where the police and administration were notably absent as arson and looting persisted for hours, leading to a riot. Such a critique underscores a broader dissatisfaction with the state's ability to maintain law and order.

Meanwhile, Amitabh Yash, Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), Special Task Force, Uttar Pradesh, reported the arrest of five main accused in the case. He detailed a brief exchange of fire that resulted in injuries to Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib but confirmed there were no fatalities.

SP Bahraich, Vrinda Shukla, further explained the circumstances leading to the police firing in self-defence, injuring two. She assured that the injured were receiving medical treatment and that strict action would be taken against all arrested individuals.

The clash in Bahraich, which led to the death of Ramgopal Mishra and injuries to several others during a Durga idol immersion procession, has sparked significant political and public debate.

The incident has become a focal point for discussions on the state's handling of violence, the conduct of the police, and the broader implications for community relations in Uttar Pradesh. As investigations continue and the arrested individuals face legal proceedings, the incident remains a contentious issue reflecting broader concerns about governance, law enforcement, and social harmony in the state.
