Everest Denies Reports On Product Ban In Singapore And Hong Kong

Indian spice brand Everest responded to a Good Returns (One India) email on recent reports about the ban of their product by food regulators in Singapore and Hong Kong. The reports claimed that the company's product has presence of ethylene oxide in specific spice items. The company has denied the reports and claimed it to be false.

In an email the company's spokeperson said "Recent reports suggesting a ban on Everest products in Singapore and Hong Kong are entirely false. We want to clarify that there is no ban in place in either country. Rather, Singapore's food safety authority responded to a recall alert issued in Hong Kong by requesting our importer to temporarily hold and recall one product for additional inspection-a standard procedure aimed at safeguarding consumer interests."

"Everest is committed to upholding the highest standards of hygiene and safety across our manufacturing facilities, which boast over 50 years of industry experience. Our dedication to food safety is paramount, as evidenced by the multitude of national and international certifications we have earned over the years." added Everest's spokesperson.

The dispute started when the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Centre for Food Safety (CFS) in Hong Kong issued advisories against using specific goods from Everest and another well-known Indian brand, MDH.

Ethylene oxide, classified as a 'Group 1 carcinogen' by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, was reportedly found in four products - Madras Curry Powder, Sambhar Masala, and Curry Powder from MDH, as well as Fish Curry Masala from Everest. The regulators instructed vendors to halt sales and remove the affected products from shelves due to levels of ethylene oxide exceeding permissible limits.

"We want to assure our customers that each and every one of our products undergoes rigorous quality control checks to ensure adherence to our stringent standards. Prior to export, all items receive necessary clearances and approval from the laboratories of the Spice Board of India, further solidifying our commitment to safety and quality." spokeperson added.

"It's important to note that this temporary hold affects only one out of our extensive range of 60 Everest products. We want to reassure our customers that this isolated incident does not reflect upon the safety and quality of our entire product line. Our commitment to delivering safe and superior products remains unwavering" company highlighted.

"We want to thank our customers for their continued trust in Everest. We assure you that our products are safe and of the highest quality, and there is no cause for concern. We remain dedicated to maintaining transparency in our processes and upholding the standards that have defined the Everest brand for over five decades" Everest emphasised.

Meanwhile, the Indian government has taken proactive steps to address the issue comprehensively. Food commissioners across the country have been mobilized to collect samples from all spice manufacturing units for testing. This initiative aims to ensure compliance with safety standards and provide reassurance to consumers regarding the safety of spice products.

Everest is steadfast in its commitment to openness and collaboration with law enforcement as the investigation moves forward. The company stressed that its customers' welfare is its first priority and that it is committed to upholding the strictest standards of food safety and quality.

Everest's response to the recent spice controversy reflects its commitment to integrity and accountability in the face of challenges. By addressing the allegations head-on and providing clarity to consumers, Everest aims to uphold trust and confidence in its brand while continuing to deliver safe and exceptional products to its loyal customers worldwide.
