Evading CBI? TMC Minister Madan Mitra checks into Government hospital ahead of questioning

Kolkata, Nov 21: West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra has got himself admitted to a hospital just before his interrogation by the CBI in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam case.

Mitra is the first TMC Minister to be summoned in the scam that has brought embarrassment to the West Bengal Government.

Pradip Mitra, director, SSKM Hospital wherein Mitra got himself admitted, said Mitra complained of shortness of breath and was admitted.

According to reports, Mitra who is known to be close to jailed Saradha Group chairman Sudipta Sen, spent four days at the private multi-speciality Belle Vue clinic from where he was discharged on Thursday. He then switched to a Government hospital. Mitra received the CBI's summons on Tuesday.

The special crime branch of CBI, probing the Saradha chit fund scam, has served summons to Mitra to appear before it for interrogation. Besides, Mitra, the investigating agency has also called two other prominent politicians, TMC leader Srinjoy Bose and Congress leader Somen Mitra.

The Minister has been seen in video clips praising Sen at a meeting of Saradha agents.

A few days back, suspended Trinamool MP Kunal Ghosh allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming overdose of sleeping pills in jail. Ghosh had earlier threatened that he would take his own life if the real accused in the case were not arrested. Ghosh also alleged that top leaders of his party are being shielded.

Meanwhile, the CBI, which is investigating the scam in West Bengal and Odisha, has filed two chargesheets in the case.
