Environmentalists in Dehradun Hold Tree Funeral Procession to Protest Deforestation
Environmentalists and intellectuals gathered on Sunday for a symbolic tree funeral procession in Dehradun. This event was part of the Save Environment Movement 2.0, aiming to protest against the widespread cutting of trees for development projects. Participants, under the banner of Long Suffering Citizens of Dehradun, paid respects to trees already felled and those at risk due to ongoing development.

People dressed in white with black bands over their mouths marched peacefully towards the state secretariat, carrying a bier made from dry tree branches. However, police intervened midway, halting their progress. The branches were sourced from a tree graveyard near Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium, where translocated trees from Sahasradhara Road had failed to thrive.
Environmental Concerns and Activism
Social Activist Anoop Nautiyal called for a complete ban on transferring forest land for projects in Doon Valley. He highlighted the proposed widening of the Rishikesh-Dehradun road, which threatens over 3,000 trees, merely to cut travel time by 15 minutes. Nautiyal remarked, "The Chipko movement was started in Uttarakhand 51 years ago. Now for the first time in the history of the country, such a funeral procession has been taken out in Dehradun. This will ignite the awareness about the environment in the entire country."
Speakers like Jyotsna, Ajay Sharma, and Karan voiced concerns about large-scale deforestation since the state's formation. They noted that this has significantly impacted Dehradun's climate. Previously known for its pleasant weather, Dehradun is now facing deteriorating conditions similar to Delhi.
Past Protests and Government Response
A year ago, this movement successfully opposed tree cutting for Garhi Cantt road widening. The government eventually announced that no more trees would be cut for this project. This past success fuels hope among activists that continued protests can lead to further positive outcomes.
The procession aimed to raise environmental awareness across India. It highlighted the urgent need to balance development with ecological preservation. The event underscored how unchecked development can harm local climates and ecosystems.
The gathering served as a reminder of the importance of sustainable development practices. It called attention to the need for policies that protect natural resources while accommodating growth. Such initiatives are crucial for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring long-term environmental health.
