India Calls for Protection of Minorities After Arrest of Hindu Leader Chinmoy Das in Bangladesh
India has expressed significant concern over the arrest and denial of bail to Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das in Bangladesh. Authorities in India have urged Bangladesh to safeguard the safety and security of Hindus and other minority groups. Das, who leads the Hindu group Sammilita Sanatani Jote, was detained by Bangladeshi police near Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Protests and Legal Proceedings
On Tuesday, a Bangladeshi court refused bail for Das, who faces sedition charges, leading to his imprisonment. This decision sparked protests among Hindus in various areas, including Dhaka and Chattogram. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India expressed deep concern over these developments, highlighting that Das also serves as the spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilit Sanatan Jagran Jote.
The MEA pointed out that this incident is part of a troubling pattern involving attacks on Hindus and other minorities by extremist groups in Bangladesh. Documented cases include arson, looting, theft, vandalism, and desecration of temples and deities. The MEA criticised the situation where perpetrators remain free while a religious leader faces charges for peaceful assembly.
Bangladesh's Response
The MEA also condemned attacks on minorities protesting peacefully against Das's arrest. They urged Bangladesh to ensure the safety of all minorities and uphold their rights to peaceful assembly and expression. In response, Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs dismissed India's concerns as unfounded and contrary to the spirit of friendship between the two nations.
Dhaka emphasised its judiciary's independence and stated that such statements misrepresent facts. They argued that the MEA's remarks do not reflect the harmony among different faiths in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government is committed to ending impunity for human rights violators and ensuring all citizens can practice their religion freely.
Bangladesh reaffirmed its commitment to protecting all citizens, especially religious minorities. They stressed their dedication to maintaining communal harmony across the country. The government reiterated its responsibility to ensure safety for all individuals, regardless of religious identity.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between India and Bangladesh concerning minority rights. Both countries have emphasised their commitment to protecting religious freedoms while navigating diplomatic challenges.
