Enforcement Directorate Slaps Rs 908 Crore Penalty On DMK MP S Jagathratchakan, Here's Why
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) announced on Wednesday that a penalty of Rs 908 crore has been imposed for foreign exchange rule violations against DMK MP S Jagathratchakan and his family. The federal agency stated that properties worth Rs 89.19 crore, seized in September 2020, have now been confiscated following an adjudication order issued on August 26 under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
Jagathratchakan, aged 76, is the representative for the Arakkonam Lok Sabha seat. The ED's investigation into the MP, a businessman from Tamil Nadu, his family members, and related Indian entities led to the seizure of various movable and immovable properties. These properties are valued at Rs 89.19 crore.

Foreign Exchange Violations
The ED initiated a FEMA probe against Jagathratchakan and his family members. This investigation resulted in a seizure order dated September 11, 2020, under section 37A of FEMA. The properties seized included both movable and immovable assets in the names of the MP and his family members.
"The properties worth Rs 89.19 crore which were seized in terms of section 37A of FEMA were also ordered for confiscation, and penalty of Rs 908 crore is levied vide Adjudication Order dated 26/08/2024," stated the ED.
Seizure and Confiscation
The adjudication order issued on August 26 confirmed the confiscation of these properties. The ED's statement highlighted that this action was taken as part of their ongoing efforts to enforce compliance with foreign exchange regulations.
Jagathratchakan's involvement in this case underscores the seriousness with which the ED is pursuing violations of foreign exchange rules. The substantial penalty imposed reflects the gravity of the infractions committed by the MP and his associates.
This development is part of a broader crackdown by Indian authorities on financial irregularities involving prominent individuals and entities. The ED continues to monitor and investigate such cases to ensure adherence to legal financial practices.
The case against Jagathratchakan serves as a reminder of the stringent measures being implemented to curb illegal financial activities. It also highlights the importance of transparency and accountability among public figures and businesspersons in India.
As investigations proceed, further actions may be taken based on new findings or evidence that emerges. The ED remains vigilant in its efforts to uphold financial integrity within the country.
