Hindu Monk Swami Satchidananda Calls for Abolishing Upper Dress Removal for Temple Entry in Kerala
A Hindu monk in Kerala has urged an end to the tradition requiring male devotees to remove their upper garments before entering temples. Swami Satchidananda, leader of the Sivagiri Mutt established by Sree Narayana Guru, highlighted that this practice persists in many temples across the state. During a pilgrimage conference, he labelled it a social evil and called for its abolition.

The custom of removing upper attire was historically introduced to check if men wore the sacred thread, or poonool, associated with Brahmins. Swami Satchidananda pointed out that this practice contradicts the teachings of Sree Narayana Guru. He expressed disappointment that even temples linked to the sage-reformer continue this tradition. "When some Sree Narayaneeya temples are also found to be following the same, I feel great regret about it," he stated.
Temple Practices and Social Reformation
Swami Satchidananda emphasised that Sree Narayana Guru was instrumental in modernising temple culture. Despite this, many Sree Narayaneeya temples insist on maintaining the practice of men removing their upper attire. The monk insisted on correcting this at any cost, aligning with the progressive ideals of the revered reformer.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan attended the event and supported Swami Satchidananda's call for change. He suggested that ending this practice could be a significant step towards social reformation. The Chief Minister's backing adds weight to the monk's appeal for modernising temple customs in line with contemporary values.
In some temples, entry is restricted for people from other religions. This exclusionary practice is also seen in certain Sree Narayaneeya temples, which Swami Satchidananda finds regrettable. The monk's call for reform aims to align temple practices with inclusive and modern principles advocated by Sree Narayana Guru.
The monk's appeal highlights a broader need for change within temple traditions in Kerala. By addressing outdated customs, there is potential for fostering a more inclusive and progressive religious environment. The support from political leaders like Chief Minister Vijayan underscores the importance of such reforms in promoting social harmony.
Swami Satchidananda's call for change reflects a desire to align temple practices with modern values. His emphasis on inclusivity and adherence to Sree Narayana Guru's teachings serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for social progress within religious institutions.
