Beed Lok Sabha Candidates Scrutinized for Election Expense Discrepancies
Election authorities have recently scrutinized the election expenditure reports of candidates from Maharashtra's Beed constituency, revealing significant discrepancies. Among those flagged for irregularities are Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Pankaja Munde and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Bajrang Sonavane. The scrutiny comes ahead of the Lok Sabha polls scheduled for May 13 in the constituency.

Pankaja Munde reported her election expenses from April 24 to May 2 as Rs 2,73,038. However, an examination by the expenditure inspector revealed her actual spending during this period was significantly higher, totaling Rs 8,68,101. This discrepancy amounts to a difference of Rs 5,95,063. Similarly, Bajrang Sonavane's reported expenses for April 22 to May 2 were Rs 3,53,165, whereas the expenditure inspector's records show a total of Rs 8,84,459, indicating a variance of Rs 5,31,294.
These findings have prompted action under Section 77 of The Representation Of The People Act, 1951, which mandates candidates to accurately report their election expenditures from the nomination filing date to the election results date. Notices were issued to both Munde and Sonavane on Monday, providing them with a 48-hour window to respond. Failure to address these notices could lead to legal repercussions, as stated by District Election Officer and Collector Deepa Mudhol Munde in a press note.
In addition to Munde and Sonavane, seven other Lok Sabha candidates have been notified for not submitting their expenditure records by the May 4 deadline. These candidates include Karuna Dhananjay Munde, Sheshrao Veer, Gokul Sawase, Prakash Bhagwan Solanke, Rajendra Hoke, Shaikh Tausif Abdul Sattar, and Shaikh Ejaz. They have also been given a 48-hour ultimatum to present their financial records or face potential legal actions.
The enforcement of stringent measures on election expenditure reporting underscores the authorities' commitment to maintaining transparency and fairness in the electoral process. As the Beed constituency prepares for the upcoming polls, the focus on accurate financial disclosures is a critical step towards ensuring an equitable electoral competition.
