Election Commission's Meeting on Electoral Roll Revision and Preparedness for Upcoming Lok Sabha Elections in Punjab
A team from the Election Commission discussed the revision of voters' list, inclusion of new voters, deletion of deceased voters' names, elector-population ratio, gender ratio and age cohorts. They also focused on ensuring inclusivity with a focus on marginalised segments.
On Wednesday, a team from the Election Commission led by Deputy Election Commissioner Hirdesh Kumar held an important meeting in Chandigarh. The purpose of this assembly was to discuss the special summary revision of the electoral roll and preparations for the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. Among those present were Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer Sibin C and all 23 Deputy Commissioners-cum-District Election Officers (DEOs).
Focus on Voter List Revision

The primary focus area of this meeting was the revision of voters' lists, which included adding new eligible voters and removing names of deceased individuals, as mentioned in an official statement released after the event. In addition to this, a review was carried out regarding electoral roll management at district level.
Election Commission's Assessment
Kumar assessed existing gaps in rolls concerning elector-population (EP) ratio, gender ratio and age cohorts. He emphasized that these areas needed immediate attention to ensure accurate representation during elections.
Call for Error-Free Electoral Roll
The DEOs have been tasked with making concerted efforts towards ensuring a 100 per cent error-free electoral roll. They were further instructed to pay special attention towards inclusivity by focusing on marginalized segments such as persons with disabilities (PwDs), transgenders etc., according to the statement released post-meeting.
Inclusion of Youth Voters
Kumar also urged DEOs to concentrate on voter registration among youths especially within the age group of 18-19 years. This demographic is crucial as they will be first-time voters who can play a significant role in shaping political landscapes.
Human Resource Management for Elections
Apart from voter list revisions and inclusion efforts, another key point discussed during this meeting was the management of human resources for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Punjab, with its 13 Lok Sabha seats, holds significant weight in these elections and therefore requires efficient resource allocation.
In conclusion, this meeting conducted by the Election Commission was a crucial step towards ensuring fair and inclusive participation in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Punjab. With a focus on updating voter lists, improving inclusivity among marginalized groups and youths, and efficient human resource management for conducting polls smoothly, it is evident that preparations are well underway. These efforts reflect the commitment of election authorities to uphold democratic values by providing every eligible citizen an equal opportunity to participate in shaping India's future.
