Election Commission, Congress To Discuss Haryana Poll Results At 6 PM

In a significant development following the October 5 Haryana assembly elections, the Congress party's refusal to accept its defeat has led to a request for a meeting with the Election Commission (EC).

The party has cited alleged irregularities in the vote-counting process as a reason for its dissatisfaction with the election results.

Election Commission Congress To Discuss Haryana Poll Results At 6 PM

The Election Commission has agreed to meet with a Congress delegation at 6 PM today at its office. This meeting comes after Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh and Pawan Khera, publicly stated on October 8, 2024, that the election results were "unacceptable." In response to these claims, the EC highlighted the importance of addressing these assertions in an open forum.

In a letter sent to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, NT Bhutia, principal secretary of the Election Commission, referred to the statements made by Congress leaders regarding the recent legislative assembly election results. The EC emphasized that such remarks were "unprecedented" and reflected an "undemocratic rejection of the people's will."

The letter also acknowledged that several Congress members, including Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, had characterized the poll outcome as "unexpected," indicating a disconnect between the party's expectations and the actual results.

The meeting will involve a 12-member delegation from Congress, which includes those leaders who made the controversial statements. This gathering aims to provide a platform for Congress to air its grievances and seek clarification on the electoral process.

Despite facing expectations of a strong performance and a favourable outcome due to anti-incumbency sentiments, the BJP secured a third consecutive term in Haryana, winning 48 seats out of the 90-member assembly. The Congress party managed to win only 37 seats, with three independent candidates and two members from the Indian National Lok Dal also emerging victorious.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the outcome of today's meeting between Congress and the Election Commission may have implications for future elections and the party's strategy moving forward.
