Eknath Shinde Accepts Deputy Chief Minister Role In Maharashtra's New Mahayuti Government
According to media reports, Eknath Shinde has agreed to become one of the two deputy chief ministers in Maharashtra's new Mahayuti government. This decision follows extensive discussions within the alliance. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for December 5, according to sources. Shinde, who previously served as Chief Minister, had initially been hesitant to accept a deputy role under BJP's Devendra Fadnavis.
Fadnavis is expected to return as Chief Minister, with Shinde and NCP leader Ajit Pawar taking their oaths alongside him in Mumbai. This marks a notable change in Shinde's position. The allocation of cabinet positions among the Mahayuti partners—BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP—will occur after the ceremony.

Cabinet Allocation Details
The BJP is likely to secure 21-22 ministries, including key portfolios like Home and Revenue. They are also expected to retain the Speaker and Legislative Council Chairman roles. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena has requested 16 ministries but may settle for 12, including Urban Development. They are vying for the Legislative Council Chairman position while holding the Deputy Chairman post.
The NCP is anticipated to receive 9-10 ministries, including Finance and Deputy Speaker roles. Discussions on finalising cabinet portfolios will be led by Shinde in the coming days. He recently underwent medical tests due to a throat infection and fever but assured reporters that he is fine.
Political Developments
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Shirsat confirmed that all is well within the Mahayuti coalition. He stated that it would be clear by Tuesday evening whether Shinde remains part of the government or not. "The three leaders have sat and talked. There is no confusion," said Shirsat.
Meanwhile, the BJP Legislative Party plans to meet at 10 am on Wednesday to elect its legislature party leader. A formal announcement regarding its chief ministerial candidate is expected following this meeting.
Last week, Shinde's sudden illness and unexpected trip to his hometown Satara raised eyebrows after his talks with BJP leaders in Delhi. His abrupt departure disrupted a crucial Mahayuti meeting intended to finalise a power-sharing formula over the weekend.
Upcoming Events
Shinde returned to Mumbai on Sunday as the deadline for government formation approached. NCP leader Ajit Pawar travelled to Delhi on Monday while Shinde and Fadnavis remained in Mumbai meeting party workers and leaders.
The BJP has confirmed that the new chief minister will be sworn in at 5 p.m. on December 5 at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent leaders are expected to attend, with preparations for the ceremony already underway.
