Ek Hai Toh Safe Hai: BJP's New Slogan To Unite People

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP experienced a significant shift in voter behaviour, resulting in a major setback for the Congress party. The Congress had campaigned on the theme of "Constitutional Defense." Notably, there was a marked change in voting patterns in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. In Maharashtra, minor vote differences in certain constituencies greatly impacted the Grand Alliance due to low turnout in some Muslim-majority areas, leading to unexpected losses.

The BJP's victory margin was influenced by several factors, despite resolving long-standing issues like the Ram temple construction, abolishing Article 370, and banning triple talaq. These actions led to disapproval from minority communities. Consequently, the BJP secured only 240 seats, falling short of their 400-seat target and becoming dependent on allied parties for a majority. This dependence has forced the BJP to compromise on key issues, as seen with the Waqf Amendment Bill being referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee due to insufficient support for direct passage.

Challenges and Strategic Adjustments

The BJP suffered a symbolic defeat in Ayodhya, which was significant given its connection to the Ram temple issue. This loss, along with defeats in other regions, highlighted challenges posed by opposition strategies that effectively united various voter groups against them. In response to these setbacks, the BJP adjusted its strategy for subsequent elections.

In Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir elections following their Lok Sabha performance, the BJP achieved notable victories. This success was partly attributed to leveraging nationalistic and unifying slogans amidst communal tensions in Bangladesh affecting Hindus there. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's campaign messages resonated strongly with voters in Haryana by drawing parallels with Hindu struggles in Bangladesh.

Consolidating Voter Base

The BJP has intensified efforts to consolidate Hindu votes by promoting unity and safety within the community. They emphasise the dangers of division through slogans like "Ek Rahane To Seif Rahane" ("One will be safe"). This message is reinforced by references to historical and recent displacements of Hindus and Sikhs from Kashmir, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

By invoking these narratives, the BJP aims to secure a consolidated voter base while addressing losses encountered during Lok Sabha elections and subsequent political engagements. Through this strategy, they seek to reassert their ideological agenda and maintain political dominance by appealing to communal unity and security concerns.
