Election Commission Rebukes Andhra Leaders for Conduct Breach

The Election Commission of India has issued a stern warning to two prominent political figures in Andhra Pradesh, Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister and leader of the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), and N Chandrababu Naidu, the opposition leader and head of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Both have been censured for breaching the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during their recent election campaigns. The Commission's directive emphasized the necessity for both leaders to exercise caution in their public statements moving forward.

EC Rebukes Andhra Leaders

In a detailed observation, the Election Commission highlighted instances where both Reddy and Naidu engaged in derogatory personal attacks against each other. These exchanges included Reddy labeling Naidu with terms such as ‘habitual offender’, ‘rogue’, and ‘sadist’, while Naidu retorted with descriptions of Reddy as ‘venom spewing’, ‘mayala fakir’—a reference to an evil movie character—and ‘fake fellow’. Such exchanges were noted during their campaign speeches across Andhra Pradesh.

Avinash Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Election Commission, addressed orders to both leaders, underscoring the breach of the MCC provisions. The orders were a response to the continued use of derogatory language despite previous notices from the Commission. The leaders were reminded of their responsibility to uphold the dignity of political discourse and adhere to the MCC guidelines strictly.

The Election Commission's reprimand comes at a critical time as Andhra Pradesh gears up for its upcoming elections. Scheduled for May 13, the state will vote for its 175-member Assembly and 25 Lok Sabha seats. With the counting of votes set for June 4, the political atmosphere in Andhra Pradesh is highly charged.

The Commission's statement also expressed an expectation that all political leaders would adhere to the MCC's provisions in both letter and spirit. This move is seen as an attempt by the Election Commission to ensure a fair and respectful election process, setting a standard for political conduct in India.

As Andhra Pradesh prepares for its electoral process, the actions taken by the Election Commission serve as a reminder of the importance of maintaining decorum in political engagements. The directive to Reddy and Naidu to modulate their public utterances is a step towards fostering a more respectful and issue-focused electoral campaign.
