Earthquake of 5.4 Magnitude Hits J&K, Strong Tremors Felt In Delhi and Parts Of North India

An earthquake of magnitude 5.4 on the Richter scale hit Doda in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday afternoon, creating panic among several residents.

The tremors were also felt in Delhi-NCR and parts of north India including Chandigarh and Mohali.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said an earthquake of magnitude 5.7 on the Richter scale occurred 30 km southeast of Kishtwar in Jammu & Kashmir.

A local from Srinagar said,"The earthquake scared school children. People in shops rushed out. It was scary. This was more intense than the tremors last week..."

Speakaing to ANI, Dr OP Mishra, Director, National Center for Seismology said,''An earthquake of 5.4 magnitude was recorded in J&K's Doda today. Tremors might have been felt in HP, Chandigarh, Punjab and all adjoining areas. Maybe the aftershock will be of lesser magnitude than the main shock.''

    Meanwhile, Tremors were felt in Lahore, Islamabad, and Peshawar, prompting people to rush out of their offices and homes. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.

    In Punjab, the tremors were felt in Shakar Garh, Chichawatni, Sialkot, Mandi Bahauddin, Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Hafizabad, and Zafarwal. The quake hit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Abbottabad, Swabi, and Swat areas.

    Meanwhile, in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, the tremors were felt in Bagh, DhirKot, and Muzaffarabad areas.

    Earlier on April 30, 2023, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck Jammu and Kashmir at 5:15 AM IST. The epicenter of the earthquake was located near the town of Katra, which is a popular pilgrimage destination for Hindus. The earthquake was felt in several parts of Jammu and Kashmir, including Srinagar, Jammu, and Leh. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

    The Kashmir region is located in a seismically active zone. In the past, the region has been hit by several large earthquakes, including a magnitude 7.6 earthquake in 2005 that killed more than 80,000 people.
