DVR Recovered from Crashed Air India Site in Ahmedabad; Could Reveal Cause of Tragedy
A major breakthrough in the investigation into the Air India Flight AI-171 crash came on Friday as a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) was recovered from the wreckage. Officials believe the DVR could provide crucial data that may reveal the exact cause of the Air India crash that claimed 241 lives.
An officer from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) found the DVR at the crash site near BJ Medical College hostel in Ahmedabad. "It's a DVR, which we have recovered from the debris. The FSL team will come here soon," an ATS official said, referring to the Forensic Science Laboratory team set to analyse the device.

Confirming the recovery, an ATS personnel at the crash site told ANI, "It's a DVR, which we have recovered from the debris. The FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) team will come here soon."
DVR is not the same as a black box, which typically comprises two key aviation components: the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR). While the DVR may store video footage or other data from the aircraft, the black box is specifically designed to capture critical flight parameters and cockpit audio, which are essential for investigating the circumstances leading up to an accident.
Air India Crash in Ahmedabad: What We Know So Far
On June 12, 2025, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operated by Air India, heading to London Gatwick, crashed minutes after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. The aircraft, carrying 242 passengers and crew, went down around 1:43 PM, just five minutes after its departure at 1:38 PM.
The aircraft plummeted into the hostel mess area of BJ Medical College, where more than 100 students were gathered for lunch. A massive explosion followed, with thick smoke visible for miles.
Tragically, only one survivor, Vishwaskumar Ramesh, who was seated in 11A, made it out alive. His brother, who was travelling with him, was among the deceased. Former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani was also on board and lost his life in the crash.
Mayday Call and Loss of Communication
Preliminary reports confirm that the pilots sent a 'Mayday' distress signal shortly after takeoff, indicating a life-threatening emergency. However, communication was lost soon after, and the aircraft failed to respond to further calls from air traffic control.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who met the sole survivor at the hospital, confirmed that 241 out of 242 people had died. "Due to the huge amount of fuel-1.25 lakh litres-and the intense heat from the explosion, no one else could be rescued," Shah stated.
Why the DVR Recovery Is Crucial
Experts believe the recovered DVR from the Air India crash holds key cockpit recordings and system data. This could help investigators piece together what led to the sudden failure of the aircraft.
A team of IAF, DGCA, and FSL officials is expected to begin the data retrieval process, which may take days to weeks. Aviation safety experts underline that the DVR data will be vital in determining whether the crash was due to technical failure, human error, or other unforeseen issues.
The recovery of the Air India DVR from the crash site in Ahmedabad has injected fresh hope into the probe. As the nation mourns the loss of 241 lives in one of India's worst aviation disasters, all eyes are now on what the black box and DVR data will reveal.
