Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu attended a Vijayadashami event in the state capital Shimla. He performed the traditional pooja ahaed of the 'Ravana Dahan'. The event involved burning effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran, and Meghnad at the temple grounds. A large crowd gathered to witness the Chief Minister set ablaze a 45-foot Ravana effigy, along with 35-foot and 30-foot effigies of Kumbhkaran and Meghnad, respectively.

The Chief Minister extended greetings to the people of Himachal Pradesh on this festive occasion. He emphasised that Dussehra represents the triumph of good over evil.

"This festival is celebrated as the victory of 'dharma' over 'adharma' and inspires us to live with dignity and work with the spirit of public welfare," he stated. He also acknowledged recent disasters in Himachal Pradesh but expressed optimism about recovery efforts.

"Dussehra is the festival of victory over injustice...We all should live in brotherhood...Today I pray for the development of Himachal Pradesh," CM Sukhu added.

Significance of Vijayadashami

Vijayadashami, commonly known as Dussehra, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated annually at Navaratri's conclusion. It falls on Ashvin's tenth day in the Hindu Luni-Solar Calendar, typically aligning with September or October in the Gregorian calendar. This year, it was observed on October 24th, with Dashami Tithi beginning at 5:45 PM on October 23rd and ending at 3:14 PM on October 24th.

The festival involves vibrant processions leading to rivers or oceanfronts. Participants carry clay statues of deities like Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya while chanting and playing music. These statues are then immersed in water as part of a farewell ritual. In some regions, towering effigies of Ravana are burnt amidst fireworks to symbolise evil's defeat.

Dussehra Celebrations Across India

Dussehra is celebrated with enthusiasm across India, including Himachal Pradesh. It signifies dharma's victory over adharma and encourages people to uphold dignity and public welfare values. The festival also marks the start of preparations for Diwali, another major Hindu festival celebrated twenty days after Vijayadashami.

This year's celebrations were particularly meaningful for Himachal Pradesh as it continues its recovery from recent calamities. The Chief Minister's participation in traditional rituals highlighted resilience and hope for restoration within the state.

As communities come together during these festivities, they reflect on cultural heritage while looking forward to brighter days ahead. The spirit of unity and renewal resonates strongly during such occasions across India.
