Droupadi Murmu Becomes First Indian President to Fly in Rafale from Key Operation Sindoor Base

President Droupadi Murmu made history as she took off from the Ambala Air Force Base in Haryana for a sortie in a Rafale fighter jet. The Ambala base holds immense significance for India's recent defense operations and strategic missions.

Rafale jets from this base played a crucial role during Operation Sindoor, launched five months ago to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack. The operation showcased India's commitment to countering cross-border terrorism through precision strikes carried out by the Air Force.

During the mission, Rafale aircraft had targeted terror camps across the border, sending out New Delhi's firm anti-terror message. The successful operation also demonstrated the advanced capabilities of India's newly inducted fighter jets.

Second Fighter Jet Sortie for the President

This marks President Murmu's second sortie in a fighter jet. As the Supreme Commander of India's Armed Forces, she earlier flew in a Sukhoi-30 MKI jet on April 8, 2023, from the Tezpur Air Force Station in Assam.

That historic flight made her the third Indian President and the second woman head of state to experience a fighter jet sortie. Her participation reflects India's tradition of presidential engagement with the Armed Forces.

Continuing a Legacy of Presidential Sorties

Before Murmu, former Presidents APJ Abdul Kalam and Pratibha Patil had also flown in Sukhoi-30 MKI jets. Their flights took place at the Lohegaon Airbase near Pune, continuing a legacy of symbolic yet powerful gestures of military solidarity.

First Indian President to Fly in a Rafale Jet

This is the first time an Indian President has flown in a Rafale fighter jet, manufactured by the French aerospace company Dassault Aviation. The Rafales were formally inducted into the Indian Air Force's fleet in 2020.

They form part of the elite 17 Squadron, known as the Golden Arrows, stationed at the Ambala Air Force Base. These aircraft are recognized for their superior speed, precision, and combat efficiency.
