DPCC Seeks Proposals to Study Enhanced STP Capacity's Impact on Yamuna Water Quality

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) is seeking proposals from government bodies for a study on the impact of increasing sewage treatment plant capacity on the Yamuna river's water quality. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of the Delhi Jal Board's sewage treatment plants (STPs) in reducing pollution levels in the river.

DPCC Invites Proposals for Yamuna Study

Government institutions specialising in environmental research are encouraged to submit detailed proposals. These should include methodologies and cost estimates, and must be emailed to the DPCC's member secretary within 15 days. The study will also explore other pollution sources affecting the Yamuna's water quality beyond STP capacity.

Assessing Sewage Treatment Capacity

An official stated that the study's goal is to evaluate potential water quality improvements if all sewage is treated. The DPCC raised concerns about ongoing pollution in the Yamuna during a February board meeting, despite STPs reportedly treating 70% of Delhi's sewage.

Currently, Delhi produces 792 million gallons per day (MGD) of sewage, but its STPs can handle only 712 MGD. However, officials report that only 550-600 MGD of sewage is actually treated.
