Does the Chinese proposal on Ukraine crisis make sense?

US and allies rejected a 12-point peace plan proposed by China. The proposal was discussed in a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council where US NSA Jake Sullivan dismissed it.

Instead of accepting Chinese proposal for peace on the Ukraine crisis, America and the EU have joined hands to impose sanctions on the Chinese firms. Earlier this week the senior Chinese diplomat Wang Yi visited Russia and met President Vladimir Putin with the proposal; however, even Russia authorities denied any such proposal. However, later on this was discussed in the Security Council.

Reports have also come out that Ukrainian President Zelensky has given some mixed reactions on the peace proposal from the Chinese diplomat. He is in fact also looking for a meeting with the Chinese leader Xi Jinping in the coming days. However, surprisingly, the European Union and the US have flatly rejected the proposal.

Does the Chinese proposal on Ukraine crisis make sense?

According to the reports, the US and its allies rejected a peace plan by the Chinese diplomat. Interestingly, China's peace proposal was also discussed in a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council where US National Security Adviser (NSA) Jake Sullivan dismissed it. The 12-point peace proposal calls for a ceasefire, i.e. status quo.

This accordingly means a huge loss for Ukraine as it would amount to giving away its territory to Russia. If the status quo of today is maintained it would freeze Russian troops in place on Ukrainian territory. The proposal also talks about an immediate end to all sanctions not endorsed by the UN Security Council.

China has taken Russia's side: Sullivan

Ridiculing the Chinese proposal for peace, Sullivan said that the document itself re-establishes the fact that China is on the Russian side. He said that the proposal just reminds him of what European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz have believed all this while that nothing has changed for China and it stands with Russia.

The US stand on the proposal is based on the fact that accepting the current status quo would also mean accepting the Russian claim on the Ukrainian territory. Factually, Vladimir Putin never claimed the whole of Ukraine but only two provinces - Zaporizhzhia and Kherson - that, according to him, belong to Russia.

Now that those two are in his control, he would get what he wanted. The corollary from accepting the proposal from China would also mean that Russia was justified in invading Ukraine.

Reacting to the EU and American reaction to the Chinese peace proposal, Dai, charge d'affaires at the Chinese Permanent Mission to the UN, said that bringing parties to the conflict back to the negotiating table is not going to be easy, but it is the first step toward a political solution.
