Allahabad High Court Criticises Slow Trials and Disarray in Prayagraj District Judgeship
The Allahabad High Court has expressed concern over the slow progress of trials in the Prayagraj trial court. It noted a lack of awareness regarding the prolonged detention of undertrial individuals. Justice Ajay Bhanot highlighted this issue while reviewing a bail plea for Ashfak on September 27, stating that the court's operations appear disorganised.

The high court has previously issued orders to address this matter, but they have not been effective. Justice Bhanot emphasised that the district judge in Allahabad should be informed about the poor state of affairs. The court had earlier instructed the Prayagraj district judge to investigate and report on measures taken to speed up trials for those jailed for extended periods.
Concerns Over Delayed Trials
Ashfak's legal representative pointed out that he has been imprisoned since July 2019 without any witness testimony. This highlights the inefficiency in handling cases, as no witnesses have been examined so far. The high court rejected a response from the trial court on September 17, criticising its failure to enforce measures ensuring witness attendance.
On September 25, it was reported again that no witnesses had been questioned. Consequently, the high court requested a new report. The ongoing delays in trial proceedings have raised serious concerns about the functioning of the judicial system in Prayagraj.
Judicial System Under Scrutiny
The high court's dissatisfaction stems from repeated failures to expedite trials despite previous directives. The lack of progress in Ashfak's case exemplifies broader systemic issues within the judiciary. The court's insistence on accountability underscores its commitment to addressing these inefficiencies.
The high court's actions reflect an urgent need for reform within the Prayagraj trial court system. By demanding accountability and transparency, it aims to ensure justice is served promptly and fairly for all undertrial individuals.
Efforts to improve trial efficiency are crucial for maintaining public trust in the judicial process. The high court's intervention serves as a reminder of the importance of timely justice and the need for systemic improvements within the judiciary.
