Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Commends Election Commission Amid Opposition Criticism
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar praised the Election Commission for conducting elections that have received international praise. He acknowledged that criticism is inevitable to improve the system. Dhankhar emphasised that the poll panel's independence remains intact due to well-trained bureaucracy and efficient election machinery. His comments came amid opposition parties' allegations of electoral discrepancies and tampering with voting machines.

Addressing a book launch event, Dhankhar stated, "We have an Election Commission that has worked. And it has worked in a fashion that global recognition is coming to it. Many countries in the world want their elections to be overseen by our Election Commission." He reiterated that criticism is part of striving for excellence but assured that the system's independence is preserved.
Parliamentary Privileges and Responsibilities
Dhankhar, also the Rajya Sabha chairperson, highlighted Parliament's crucial role in democracy. He explained that parliamentary privileges allow members to speak freely without legal repercussions. This freedom comes with significant responsibility, as it holds the executive accountable through dialogue and debate.
The vice president stressed that Parliament is not a venue for unchecked information or personal vendettas. Instead, it serves as a platform for representing the people's will. He noted that while voting eligibility has age restrictions, Parliament closely mirrors ideal democratic representation.
Smooth Power Transitions in India
Speaking to Harvard Business School students, Dhankhar highlighted India's seamless power transitions post-elections. He cited examples like the 2011 West Bengal assembly polls and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as instances of smooth transitions. "In this country, there is no murmur. If the election verdict is out, there are no questions raised, because it is transparent, it is accountable," he said.
Dhankhar warned against misinformation about India, suggesting it is strategically spread by forces opposed to democratic processes. He urged listeners to understand India's true democratic nature rather than relying on external narratives.
The vice president concluded by affirming that India's electoral process and parliamentary system are robust and transparent. These systems ensure accountability and reflect the people's will, maintaining democracy's integrity despite external criticisms.
