Delhi-Varanasi High Speed Rail To Cut Delhi-Airport Travel To 21 Minutes; Route, Stations Detailed

The Delhi Varanasi high speed train project is set to link Delhi, Noida International Airport and major cities in Uttar Pradesh with a fast rail corridor. From Sarai Kale Khan to Noida International Airport, the 70 kilometre journey is planned to take only 21 minutes, changing long intercity road trips into much shorter rail rides.

The route of the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project will largely run on an elevated track. The line is planned over the central verge between the carriageways of the Noida and Greater Noida expressways. From Delhi, the elevated track will pass Sector-148, Noida International Airport, Mathura and Agra, then extend towards Etawah and important cities in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

Noida International Airport is expected to be the first Indian airport with a direct link to a high speed rail line. Under the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project, one station is proposed at the airport’s Ground Transportation Centre as an underground facility. The airport is also being connected with Metro, Namo Bharat, national highways and multiple expressways for multi-modal access.

Work is underway to integrate the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project with existing and planned road networks around Noida International Airport. Links are being created to Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Yamuna-Ganga Expressway, National Highways 34 and 91 and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. Metro and Namo Bharat station locations near the airport have also been decided, giving passengers several options for onward travel.

The detailed project report for the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project is in progress under National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited. According to the decided alignment, one station is planned in Noida’s Sector-148 and two stations inside the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority area. One of these will be at the airport GTC and another at Itouli village in Mathura district.

National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited has also started examining real estate possibilities around the proposed Mathura station of the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project. Near the Yamuna Expressway, close to the YEIDA region of Mathura, the corporation has sought 100 to 200 acres of land. The idea is to reserve this land near the station for residential and commercial projects.

The representative proposed large-scale real estate development around the Mathura station. The plan includes high-rise housing, hotels, shopping complexes, office spaces and other commercial activities near the station area.

The officials associated with the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project believe such development could support project finances and local growth. Denser land use near the station is expected to speed up urbanisation, generate business opportunities and help offset some construction costs. Officers from YEIDA, National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited and the selected agency are likely to hold another round of meetings before taking final decisions.

Delhi Varanasi high speed train project route, tourism and district coverage

The Delhi Varanasi high speed train project route is planned as an 800 kilometre elevated corridor. After Delhi, the line will serve Sector-148, Noida International Airport, Mathura and Agra’s Etmadpur area. From there, stations are proposed at Etawah, Lucknow, Raebareli, Prayagraj, Bhadohi, Ayodhya and finally Varanasi, offering faster access across a large part of Uttar Pradesh.

Etmadpur village falls partly within the YEIDA area and partly under Agra Development Authority. Despite this split, the station is planned on the Agra side. Better connectivity under the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project is also expected to help tourists visiting the Taj Mahal and other nearby heritage sites, as rail travel times from Delhi-NCR could reduce sharply.

The study covers the corridor alignment near the airport and utilities such as electricity lines, water pipelines and gas networks along the track. Officials have asked administrations of all affected districts to submit detailed data so that basic services are not disrupted during construction.

Mathura is expected to gain significantly from the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project due to its station and tourism appeal. YEIDA is planning a heritage city in Mathura with special facilities and tourist-focused infrastructure. Better rail connectivity could help the region attract more visitors, more investment, new jobs and modern infrastructure, turning the area into a major urban centre.

For visitors to Vrindavan and the Banke Bihari temple, the Delhi Varanasi high speed train project may reduce travel times from Delhi to minutes instead of hours. The same corridor will also simplify same-day trips for Delhi-NCR residents wishing to visit the Taj Mahal in Agra. Currently, these journeys often require many hours on congested highways.
