Delhi Government Launches Rooftop Solar Panel Installations to Promote Clean Energy Under RESCO Model
The Delhi government is taking significant steps to cut electricity costs and encourage clean energy use by rolling out rooftop solar panel installations citywide. This initiative, under the RESCO model, involves a third-party company installing, owning, and managing solar systems on properties without requiring any upfront investment from customers. Instead, residents purchase power at reduced rates through a power purchase agreement.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta emphasised the initiative's benefits, stating that solar power will be billed at a lower rate and integrated into existing electricity bills. "Our vision is to make Delhi a clean, energy-efficient, and environmentally responsible capital. Through the RESCO model, we are ensuring that citizens of Delhi get access to solar energy without any upfront cost," she said.
Delhi's Solar Energy Initiative
The government has allocated Rs 50 crore for this project, aiming to equip 2.3 lakh homes with rooftop solar systems over three years. The initiative is expected to reduce reliance on traditional energy sources and lower overall electricity expenses. Gupta noted that this effort empowers citizens to contribute to Delhi's development as clean energy partners.
Under the Prime Minister's Surya Ghar scheme, an additional Rs 30,000 subsidy has been approved for installing 3-kilowatt rooftop solar panels. This increases the total subsidy available to Rs 1.08 lakh. The central government has already provided a Rs 78,000 subsidy for these installations.
Empowering Citizens with Clean Energy
Gupta highlighted that this move transforms every rooftop into a power station and every citizen into a contributor to a sustainable future. "We are not just providing an energy solution," she stated, "we are empowering citizens to become clean energy partners in the capital's development."
This initiative marks a significant chapter in Delhi's energy journey by promoting environmental responsibility and energy efficiency. It aims to make solar energy accessible without financial barriers, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable city.
The RESCO model ensures that residents can benefit from solar power without initial costs while contributing to reducing carbon footprints. This approach aligns with the government's vision of making Delhi an environmentally responsible capital.
