Delhis Premium Bus Service: Companies Keen on Offering AC Bus Rides
Three companies have shown interest in providing premium air-conditioned bus rides in Delhi, aiming to attract the middle and upper-middle class to use public transport. The scheme requires safety measures like a panic button and API-based integration with law enforcement agencies.
In a bid to encourage the middle and upper-middle class to switch to public transport, the Delhi government's Delhi Motor Vehicles Licensing of Aggregator Premium Buses Scheme has attracted interest from three companies.

Companies in Talks
Two companies, Aaveg and Gati, have already submitted applications, while discussions with a well-known cab aggregator are in an advanced stage. Officials have held several meetings with the three firms, and they are expected to join the scheme soon.
Safety and Security Measures
Under the scheme, aggregators must ensure the safety and security of women passengers. They are required to provide a rapid response mechanism, including a panic button on their app that should be functional at all times and integrated with law enforcement agencies through an API.
Premium Bus Specifications
A premium bus is defined as a fully air-conditioned luxury public bus with a seating capacity of at least nine passengers. It must have pre-reserved reclining seats, Wi-Fi, GPS, and CCTV cameras.
Licensing and Fees
Aggregator licenses will be granted upon payment of Rs 5 lakh and will be valid for five years. Renewals for another five years can be acquired before the expiry by paying Rs 2,500. No license fee will be levied on electric buses.
Fleet Requirements and Fares
License holders must operate and maintain a fleet of at least 25 premium buses of mini, midi, or standard sizes within 90 days from the date of the license grant. They will be permitted to determine bus routes, provided fares are dynamic and no lower than the peak fare of Delhi Transport Corporation AC buses.
Digital Ticketing and Payments
Only pre-booked digital ticketing will be allowed on these buses, with no physical tickets issued. All charges from passengers must be collected exclusively through electronic or digital payment modes.
The Delhi government's initiative to introduce premium air-conditioned bus rides aims to provide a safe, secure, and comfortable public transport option for the middle and upper-middle class. With three companies expressing interest and advanced discussions underway, the scheme is expected to be implemented soon, offering a convenient and luxurious travel experience for commuters in the national capital.
