Delhi Pollution: High Court Says No To Permission For Sale Of Firecrackers
The Delhi High Court has refused to permit the sale of firecrackers, citing the already high pollution levels in the city. This decision was made during a hearing involving the 'Delhi Fireworks Shopkeepers Association', which represents traders with permanent licences for selling crackers.
The traders' legal representative argued that the ban on storing firecrackers was causing undue harassment. Despite this, Justice Sanjeev Narula stated that the court would instruct authorities to seal storage facilities to prevent any pilferage. "The state must be involved in the sealing process so that there is no pilferage," said Justice Narula.

Firecracker Storage Concerns
Justice Narula also emphasised that selling firecrackers would not be allowed due to existing pollution concerns. The judge remarked, "We are not going to allow you to sell. There is enough pollution in this city." The court's stance was clear: no exceptions would be made for storing firecrackers as it could lead to potential misuse.
The petitioner's counsel highlighted that police began questioning licensed traders about their storage practices soon after the ban was announced. This occurred even though no sales were taking place. The court noted an instance where someone allegedly sold crackers illegally and warned of prosecution for such actions.
Government's Immediate Ban
On September 14, the Delhi government imposed a comprehensive ban on producing, storing, selling, and using all types of firecrackers until January 1. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai appealed to residents to support efforts aimed at reducing air pollution.
The court reiterated its position by stating, "We can't make an exception for you. If you store them, there is a possibility of . We will put a seal. It will be videographed." This highlights the seriousness with which authorities are addressing potential violations.
