Will file FIR against WFI chief Brij Bhushan today: Delhi Police tells SC

The Delhi Police on Friday informed the Supreme Court that it will file an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh amid the massive protests by the top wrestlers of the country.

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta informed a bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud about the latest stand of the Delhi Police.

The bench was hearing a petition filed by top women wrestlers, who have been protesting in Delhi's Jantar Mantar, seeking action against Brij Bhushan Sharan.

Top Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia, and Sakshi Malik, who have been leading the renewed protests against WFI chief asserted that they will not leave the place until a case is lodged in the matter.

The protesting wrestlers have also demanded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's intervention to resolve the issue.

"PM Modi sir talks about 'Beti Bachao' and 'Beti Padhao', and listens to everyone's 'Mann Ki Baat'. Can't he listen to our 'mann ki baat'?" Olympian Sakshi Malik said, referring to the PM's monthly radio programme.

Meanwhile, Indian Olympic Association chief PT Usha has criticised wrestlers' protest saying it would amount to indiscipline.

The protesting wrestlers said they were hurt by Usha's statement and that they were looking up to her for support.

Vinesh Phogat claimed she had even dialled PT Usha to discuss the matter but she did not respond to her call.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said the government stands with the players and he himself spoke to the protesters for 12 hours.

The Sports Ministry's Oversight Committee formed to probe the sexual harassment charges submitted its report on April 5 but the ministry is yet to make its findings public.

The wrestlers first took to the streets in January accusing the WFI chief of sexual harassment allegations. However, they withdrew protest after the IOA and the government assurance to probe their allegations against Sharan and the WFI.
