How Delhi Police Cracked The Case Of Jigisha Ghosh's Killing And Soumya Vishwanathan's Murder

A hand tattoo, a stolen wireless set, and CCTV footage helped Delhi Police solve the murder cases of Jigisha Ghosh and Soumya Vishwanathan.

In a major breakthrough, Delhi Police have successfully cracked the murder cases of IT professional Jigisha Ghosh and TV journalist Soumya Vishwanathan. The key to solving these crimes came from an unlikely source - a hand tattoo, a stolen wireless set, and CCTV footage. Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljeet Malik were arrested for the murder of Ghosh in 2009. They later confessed their involvement in Vishwanathan's murder that took place in 2008.

A Delhi court on Wednesday convicted four persons -- Kapoor, Shukla, Malik and Ajay Kumar - as part of an organised crime syndicate responsible for multiple murders and other offences including the killing of Vishwanathan. A fifth person named Ajay Sethi was also convicted under section 411 for dishonestly receiving stolen property and Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) provisions for conspiring to abet or knowingly facilitate organised crime.

The Investigation Process

Following the confessions by Kapoor, Shukla and Malik regarding their involvement in both murders; Delhi police arrested Kumar and Sethi as well. The initial lead came from CCTV footage showing one accused with a hand tattoo shopping using Jigisha’s debit card while another carried a stolen wireless set. This led investigators to Malik whose name was inked on his hand while Kapoor had snatched the wireless set from a police officer.

Details about Crimes

The criminals kidnapped Jigisha near her house in Vasant Vihar before murdering her after looting her possessions. It was during this investigation that Ravi Kapoor revealed they had committed another murder at Nelson Mandela Marg which led authorities to connect them with Soumya's case too.

Narrative of Soumya's Murder

On the night of Vishwanathan’s murder, Kapoor drove a Maruti Wagon R car with Shukla as his passenger. Malik and Kumar were in the rear seat. As they spotted Soumya driving alone in her Maruti Zen, they tried to waylay her vehicle. When she did not stop, Kapoor opened fire causing fatal injuries.

The Aftermath

Vishwanathan's car crashed into a divider following the attack. The assailants fled from the scene but returned 20 minutes later only to flee again upon seeing police personnel arriving at the crime scene.

In conclusion, this major breakthrough has brought justice for two brutal murders that shook Delhi city. HGS Dhaliwal, then Deputy Commissioner of Police South who led this investigation said their satisfaction comes from three key factors - recovery of the weapon used in these crimes, matching forensic sketches with actual locations and corroborating confessions made by those convicted. These convictions serve as a stark reminder about our society's need for vigilance against such organized crimes and also stand testament to the relentless efforts by law enforcement agencies in ensuring justice is served.
