Delhi Liaison Officer Arrested for Stealing Scooter to Fund Wife's Medical Treatment

Delhi Police have arrested a man accused of stealing vehicles, who was later identified as a liaison officer for a well-known motors company. Anuj Kumar, aged 31, was caught after police scrutinised over 150 CCTV cameras and tracked his movements for 15 kilometres. A stolen scooter, reportedly belonging to a senior citizen, was found in his possession, according to police reports.

Liaison Officer Arrested for Scooter Theft

On February 18, a motor vehicle theft was reported at the Civil Lines police station. The complainant, Trilochnan Singh, a senior citizen from Rohini, stated that he visited the Rajpur Road Authority for official work around 11:35 am. He parked his new scooter on the footpath outside the office but accidentally left the key in it. Upon returning, he discovered the scooter missing and promptly reported the theft online.

Police Investigation and Arrest

The investigation involved analysing more than 150 surveillance camera clips to trace the suspect's movements over nearly 15 kilometres. This led the police to Ghaziabad, where they gathered intelligence on the accused. Anuj Kumar was apprehended on March 12, as confirmed by police officials.

Anuj allegedly confessed to committing the crime. He disclosed that he has been employed as a liaison officer at a private motors company for 15 years. His job required frequent visits to various RTO offices, which made him familiar with these locations. On February 18, while accompanying clients to the Rajpur Road Transport Authority, he noticed an unattended black scooter with its key still in the ignition.

Motive Behind the Theft

Overcome by temptation and financial desperation, Anuj decided to steal the vehicle. Deputy Commissioner of Police North Raja Banthia stated that Anuj was under severe financial distress due to his wife's medical expenses. Struggling with debt, he planned to sell the stolen scooter to raise funds for repaying his loans.

Kumar further explained that his financial situation had become dire due to mounting medical bills for his wife. This pressure led him to consider selling the stolen scooter as a means to alleviate his financial burdens. The investigation into this case is ongoing, according to DCP Banthia.
