Delhi LG's Surprise Visit to Kirari Reveals Sanitation Woes

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxenas visit to Kirari highlighted severe sanitation issues, including overflowing sewers, garbage heaps, and poor road conditions. He directed authorities to improve sanitation within a month.

New Delhi, February 10: Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena conducted a visit to the Kirari area on Saturday, expressing visible displeasure at the prevailing conditions of overflowing sewers, open manholes, garbage heaps, and potholed-dusty roads. The visit was prompted by repeated requests from local residents and complaints regarding the acute lack of sanitation and basic civic amenities.

Delhi LGs Inspection Sparks Sanitation Overhaul in Kirari

Dire Living Conditions Prompt Action

Starting from Bhagwan Mahavir Marg, the LG inspected various locations in Kirari known for severe waterlogging and garbage accumulation, leading to unhygienic living conditions for residents. Deeply concerned by the situation, Saxena directed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and other relevant agencies to take immediate steps to improve sanitation within a month.

LG Expresses Disappointment

Saxena's visible annoyance stemmed from the deplorable conditions in Kirari, which houses approximately 1.5 lakh households and a population of 7-8 lakh. He lamented the apathy of government agencies, highlighting that Kirari remained one of the most underdeveloped parts of the national capital despite its substantial population.

AAP MLA's Response

In response, AAP MLA from Kirari, Rituraj Jha, acknowledged that the Kirari Legislative Assembly constituency comprises nearly 99% unauthorized colonies, accommodating over 800,000 residents. He emphasized the AAP government's efforts in prioritizing essential amenities such as sewage systems, water pipelines, and roads for the well-being of the community.

Ongoing Development Projects

Jha highlighted the ongoing major sewage project in Kirari, involving the construction of roads and installation of sewage lines in 5,000 roads simultaneously. With 3,000 lanes already completed, the remaining 2,000 lanes are expected to be finished within a year. Additionally, three pumping stations are being built, with land acquired from the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).

Addressing Waterlogging Issues

Jha explained that the absence of a proper drainage system contributed to waterlogging in Kirari. However, he assured that once the drainage system is operational within the next three months, 70% of the problems will be resolved. The AAP government is also developing a drainage system for all the main roads in the area to eliminate waterlogging.

Long-Term Solutions for Waterlogging

Saxena was informed that a significant portion of Kirari is low-lying and prone to waterlogging due to the lack of a sewerage system and adequate storm water drainage. He directed the DDA to expedite the construction of a 7.2 km drain as a long-term solution to waterlogging. A comprehensive drainage plan was also sought to address the drainage issues in Kirari.

Inter-Agency Collaboration

The LG emphasized the need for collaboration among various agencies, including the PWD, DJB, I&FC department, and the railways, to overcome the perennial issues with long-term solutions. He also instructed the MCD and other departments to conduct a massive sanitation drive starting Sunday to bring about visible changes within a month. The Delhi Jal Board was directed to lay and upgrade the sewerage network in Kirari at the earliest.

Historical Context of Kirari's Development

Over the years, Kirari has transformed into a densely populated area, spanning approximately 2,800 acres. Prior to urbanization, the region was primarily used for brick kilns, resulting in deep soil excavation that created a bowl-like topography. Consequently, settlements and unauthorized colonies emerged on the same surface level, making the area susceptible to severe waterlogging.

LG's Commitment to Addressing Civic Issues

Saxena, who has been receiving numerous representations from residents affected by the lack of basic civic infrastructure and sanitation services in unauthorized colonies, intends to visit such areas regularly. These visits aim to assess the ground situation and ensure inter-departmental and inter-agency coordination to find effective solutions.
