Delhi Tops in GST Evasion: LG Saxena Advises CM Kejriwal to Probe Tax Fraud

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has advised Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to investigate alleged Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion in the city. New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has written a letter to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, urging him to direct the finance minister to conduct a thorough investigation into alleged Goods and Services Tax (GST) evasion in the city. The LG's letter highlights the seriousness of the issue, with Delhi recording the highest tax evasion in the country, involving 483 bogus firms and an evasion amount of Rs 3,028 crore.

Delhis Tax Evasion Shame: LG Orders Probe into Rs 3,028 Crore Fraud

Tax Evasion Concerns

Saxena expressed concern over the possibility of collusion between officials in the GST department and the need to assess the root cause of such tax evasion. He emphasized that this not only reflects poorly on the state of tax governance in the national capital but also results in significant losses to the public exchequer, resources that could have been utilized for public interest investments.

Report Highlights Bogus Registrations

The LG cited a Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs report released in January, which highlighted the issue of bogus registrations and fake invoices in the country. The report for the third quarter revealed shocking facts about the extent of tax evasion prevailing in Delhi.

Delhi Government's Response

In response, the Delhi government issued a statement condemning any instances of tax evasion and reaffirming its commitment to enforcing strict compliance with tax laws. The government assured that the strictest possible action would be taken against violators.

Software Development Delay

However, the Delhi government expressed dismay over the delay in implementing a software developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad to target tax evasion and improve revenue collection. The proposal has been pending in bureaucratic offices for almost a year, despite the government's proactive efforts.

The LG's letter and the Delhi government's response underscore the importance of addressing tax evasion and upholding the integrity of the tax system. Collaborative efforts between the government and relevant authorities are crucial to curb tax evasion and ensure the efficient utilization of public resources for the benefit of Delhi's citizens.
