Delhi Government Initiates Plans for Eco-Friendly Cruise Service on Yamuna River

The Delhi government is planning to introduce a cruise service on the Yamuna River, aiming to enhance tourism between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur. This initiative involves developing a six-kilometre stretch from the Wazirabad barrage to Jagatpur Shani temple for cruise operations. The project is expected to boost river-cruise tourism by offering an eco-friendly and sustainable transport option.

Delhi Plans Eco-Friendly Cruise Service on Yamuna

The Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation (DTTDC) has issued a request for quotation (RFQ) to find an operator for two solar or electric battery-powered cruises along this river section. The cruises will start and end at Sonia Vihar, covering a total round trip of seven to eight kilometres. The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) and the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will implement the project in collaboration with other local authorities.

Eco-Friendly Cruise Initiative

The selected operator will initially provide two electric-solar hybrid boats for ferry services. These boats must accommodate 20-30 passengers and travel at speeds of five to seven knots. They will feature inboard bio-toilets with zero discharge, an announcement system, and safety jackets to ensure passenger safety. The boats will be air-conditioned, leased or owned, and not older than two years.

To support the cruise operations, the irrigation and flood control department will supply floating jetties and navigational aids. Additionally, there will be shore facilities with charging infrastructure for the cruises. The operator is required to conduct a minimum of four trips daily, ensuring a safe, reliable, and comfortable experience for all passengers.

Collaborative Efforts for Sustainable Tourism

This project represents a coordinated effort among various agencies, including the IWAI, DDA, Delhi Jal Board (DJB), DTTDC, and the irrigation and flood control department. Together, they aim to create an environmentally friendly water transport system that enhances tourism while preserving the river's ecosystem.

The initiative is part of a broader strategy by the BJP government in Delhi to rejuvenate the Yamuna River. By promoting sustainable tourism through this cruise service, officials hope to attract more visitors while maintaining ecological balance.

Overall, this project highlights the government's commitment to developing innovative solutions that balance tourism growth with environmental sustainability. By leveraging renewable energy sources for transportation, Delhi aims to set an example for other regions in promoting eco-friendly tourism initiatives.
