Police Strategy and Security Measures

A senior police official stated that significant measures have been planned for the Singhu border, located on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway, as farmers begin their march toward the national capital. Authorities are actively monitoring the situation and will make further decisions based on intelligence inputs regarding the movement of farmers.

Currently, local police officers are stationed at checkposts along the Singhu border, ensuring the enforcement of GRAP-4 measures and maintaining law and order, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Background of the Protest

Farmers, primarily from Punjab, have been gathered at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, under the banners of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, in protest over several long-standing demands. These include a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of crops, debt waivers, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, and the reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act. They have also called for no increase in electricity tariffs, justice for victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, and compensation for the families of farmers who lost their lives during previous protests in 2020-21, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Previous Attempts and Government Response

Farmers had previously attempted similar marches to Delhi in February 2024 but were halted by security forces at the Punjab-Haryana borders. The farmers' march is expected to follow the same route, passing through the Singhu border, where tensions have been rising.

The district administration in Ambala, Haryana, has urged the farmers to reconsider their protest march and seek permission from Delhi Police. However, Delhi Police have confirmed they have not received any official request. To further prevent any disruption, Section 163 of BNSS, which restricts gatherings of five or more persons, has been enforced in Ambala, with notices issued near the Shambhu border, as per media reports.

Farmers' Commitment to Peaceful Protest

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher, speaking on the matter, assured the authorities that their protest would be peaceful and would not disrupt traffic. He mentioned that a delegation of farmers had already met with the superintendent of police in Ambala, informing them of their march and their commitment to a non-violent demonstration.

With the march fast approaching, all eyes are on how the protest unfolds and how both the farmers and the authorities manage the situation in the coming days.
