Delhi gangrape case: 2 convicts present themselves in HC

New Delhi, Jan 9: Two of the five convicts in the Dec 16

case-Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur-appeared before the High Court today after they were summoned to put forward their submissions. However, when Justice Pratibha Rani asked whether they had anything to say as their counsel had finished their arguments, they urged that the court sees the video showing them enjoying a party of Dec 16.

To this, the court said that the video had already been produced and seen, clearly indicating that nothing would be able to change the decision of the court. Interestingly, when the court summoned the duo, their defence counsel could not make it to the court. Reserving the order of death sentence, the court asked the defence counsel to file their written submissions by Jan 15.

Special prosecution had argued that the sentencing of the convicts in the case would send a strong message to the people of India that there is no space for "deviant behaviour" in the society. The Defence counsel, however, had argued that the dying declaration of the victim was misinterpreted and fabricated and that the accused were innocent.

The high court started hearing the case from Nov 1, 2013 on a daily basis.
