Cybercrime statistics: Delhi cases drop to 404 in 2024 as NCRB reports national rise

National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data shows registered cybercrime cases in Delhi fell from 685 in 2022 to 404 in 2024. Nationally, cases rose to 101,928 in 2024, lifting the cybercrime rate to 7.3. Fraud made up most reports, while Bengaluru recorded the highest metropolitan total.

New NCRB figures showed a steep fall in registered cybercrime cases in Delhi. Delhi recorded 404 cases in 2024, down from 685 in 2022. The National Crime Records Bureau released the latest data on Wednesday. The report also tracked trends across metropolitan cities and nationwide totals.

Across India, 1,01,928 cybercrime cases were registered in 2024. This was a 17.9 per cent rise over 2023, when 86,420 cases were recorded. The national cybercrime rate rose from 6.2 in 2023 to 7.3 in 2024. The data described fraud as the main driver.

NCRB cybercrime data: fraud led most cases in 2024

The NCRB report said 72.6 per cent of 2024 cases related to fraud. That was 73,987 out of 1,01,928 cases nationwide. Sexual exploitation formed 3.1 per cent, or 3,190 cases. Extortion followed with 2.5 per cent, or 2,536 cases. Other categories made up the remaining share.

NCRB cybercrime data: Delhi trend and charge-sheeting in 2024

Delhi’s cybercrime count reduced each year across the period in the report. Delhi recorded 685 cases in 2022 and 407 in 2023. The figure edged down to 404 in 2024. In 2024, Delhi’s cybercrime rate was 21.6. The report said 77.8 per cent of registered cases were charge-sheeted.

Neighbouring Ghaziabad recorded 479 cybercrime cases in 2024. The report noted Ghaziabad has a smaller population than Delhi. Yet the registered cybercrime total was slightly higher than Delhi’s 404 cases. The NCRB data did not provide reasons for the difference in this table.

NCRB cybercrime data: Bengaluru topped metropolitan cities in 2024

In the metropolitan cities category, Bengaluru reported the most cybercrime cases in 2024. The city recorded 17,561 cases and the highest rate at 206.6 per cent. Mumbai ranked second with 4,939 cases. Hyderabad followed with 4,009 cases in the same year.

Chennai recorded 1,882 cybercrime cases in 2024, as per the NCRB data. Kolkata reported the lowest number among metropolitan cities with 21 cases. Kolkata’s cybercrime rate was 0.1 per cent. The report said 95.6 per cent of Kolkata’s cases were charge-sheeted in 2024.

The data showed many metropolitan cities saw fewer registered cybercrime cases from 2022 to 2024. The report indicated Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai were exceptions to this pattern. NCRB figures also showed India’s total cases rose in 2024, despite declines in some cities. The new numbers set a benchmark for future comparisons.
