Cyclonic storm Dana is rapidly approaching the coast of Odisha, expected to make landfall early Friday morning, accompanied by heavy rains and thunderstorms. The cyclone is predicted to bring intense rainfall to southern West Bengal and coastal Odisha, potentially affecting nearly half of Odisha's population once it makes landfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that cyclone Dana is likely to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port early Friday. The landfall process, however, is set to commence from October 24 night.

The maximum speed during the landfall process is likely to be around 120 kmph, IMD DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said. "Therefore, heavy rainfall, wind and storm surge will reach the peak during the landfall time which is between October 24 night and October 25 morning," he added.

In a special advisory issued on October 20, the IMD noted that the upper air cyclonic circulation over the North Andaman Sea and adjacent Bay of Bengal has developed into a low-pressure area over the east-central Bay of Bengal and surrounding North Andaman Sea.
The IMD indicated that this system is expected to move west-northwest and strengthen into a depression by the morning of October 22, ultimately becoming a cyclonic storm by October 23 over the east-central Bay of Bengal.
The storm is likely to continue moving northwest, reaching the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha-West Bengal coasts by the morning of October 24.
Impact on Odisha and West Bengal
The IMD has stated that Odisha, the coastal districts of West Bengal, and isolated regions of the Andaman Islands will likely bear the brunt of Cyclone Dana. Additionally, the IMD has forecast rainfall for the northern coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh due to the cyclone's effects.
Rainfall Warnings
The IMD has issued heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings for specific areas until October 25:
- Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20 cm) is expected in isolated areas of the Andaman Islands on October 21.
- Light to moderate rainfall is anticipated across most areas, with heavy rainfall expected in Odisha on October 23. From October 24 to 25, heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast for several locations, with extremely heavy rainfall possible in isolated areas.
- For West Bengal's coastal districts, light to moderate rainfall is expected on October 23, with heavy rainfall anticipated in isolated locations. Very heavy to heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Gangetic West Bengal on October 24 and 25, as noted by the IMD.
The Odisha government has canceled all staff leave from October 23 to October 25 due to the forecast of an impending cyclone.
How to Track Cyclone Dana Live?
Although the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issues alerts for areas likely to be impacted by the cyclone hours before it strikes, it doesn't offer a real-time cyclone tracker. However, third-party platforms like Windy provide an estimated path of the cyclone, along with its predicted severity. Another reliable service is Zoom Earth, which tracks Cyclone Dana's trajectory and shows real-time wind speeds, giving a comprehensive view of the storm's movement.
