A groom from the Dalit community offered prayers at a Lord Ram temple in Indore district under police protection. The incident followed a disagreement between two groups in Sanghvi village, located 25 km from Mhow town.

Dalit Groom Prays at Ram Temple in Indore

Eyewitnesses and social media videos showed the groom arriving at the temple with his wedding procession and guests. He prayed at the temple with some family members while police were present. The police clarified that there was no restriction on the Dalit man entering the temple.

Police Clarification on Temple Entry

The police stated that the argument was about entering the temple's sanctum sanctorum, which is traditionally reserved for priests. They denied rumours that the groom was barred from entering. A statement from the police confirmed that after resolving the issue, the wedding procession continued peacefully.

Betma police station in-charge Meena Karnawat explained that no one stopped the groom from entering the temple. The discussion was about accessing the sanctum sanctorum, where only priests are allowed according to local customs. Devotees typically do not enter this part of the temple.

Community Reaction and Social Media Impact

Manoj Parmar, president of the All India Balai Mahasangh, expressed concerns over ongoing caste discrimination in rural areas. He noted that despite progress, some people still hold outdated views that affect communities like theirs. The groom belonged to the Balai community.

Videos of the incident circulated online, showing a heated exchange between the wedding party and members of a privileged caste outside the temple. This led to widespread attention and discussions on social media platforms.

The police intervened after learning about the dispute between the wedding party and another group. They managed to resolve it by explaining local traditions regarding temple entry to both sides. Afterward, prayers were offered, and the procession proceeded without further issues.

Dr. B R Ambedkar, born on April 14, 1891, in Mhow, Indore district, is a revered figure among Dalits. His birth anniversary is widely celebrated across India. The incident highlights ongoing challenges related to caste discrimination despite legal protections and societal advancements.
