Cyclone Fengal: IMD Reports Depression Advancing Towards Sri Lanka And Tamil Nadu

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that a depression over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and the nearby East Equatorial Indian Ocean is advancing towards the coasts of Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. It is anticipated to make landfall between Chennai and Puducherry. The IMD's latest bulletin indicates that this depression is expected to strengthen into a deep depression within 24 hours.

According to the IMD, the depression is currently moving northwestwards at a speed of 30 kilometres per hour. It is projected to continue this trajectory towards the Tamil Nadu-Sri Lanka coasts over the next two days. The agency's forecast suggests that this movement will persist as it intensifies.

Current Position and Distance

As of 11:30 am on November 25, the depression was located over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent East Equatorial Indian Ocean. It was positioned near latitude 5.1°N and longitude 84.5°E. This places it approximately 530 km southeast of Trincomalee, 810 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 920 km southeast of Puducherry, and 1000 km south-southeast of Chennai.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely as the depression progresses towards land. Residents in affected areas are advised to stay updated with official weather reports for any changes in its path or intensity.
