Cycling Journey to Tashigang Aims to Boost Voter Awareness in Himachal Pradesh

A unique cycling expedition, initiated by the Himachal Pradesh election department to boost voter awareness, successfully concluded at Tashigang, the world's highest polling booth located in the Lahaul and Spiti district. The Chief Electoral Officer, Maneesh Garg, announced the completion of this journey, which was led by the State Election Icon Jaspreet Pal, a passionate cyclist and professional photographer from Mandi. Jaspreet, along with his fellow cyclist Kshitij Niltu, embarked on this challenging journey covering a distance of 630 km over seven days through the rugged terrain of Spiti.

Cycling for Voter Awareness in Himachal

The expedition commenced in Shimla and traversed through various locations including Theog, Narkanda, Rampur, Jeuri, Bhavanagar, Karcham-Wangtoo, Reckong-Peo, Pooh, Khab, Nako, Sumdo, and Kaza before reaching its final destination late on Monday evening. Highlighting their remarkable journey, the duo also ventured to Kaumik—the world's highest motorable village at 15,049 ft—via Langza and Hikkim. Their adventure saw them riding above 15 thousand feet twice in consecutive days, showcasing their determination and endurance.

Throughout their journey, Jaspreet Pal and Kshitij Niltu were not alone; they were joined by local youths in Spiti who accompanied them till Rangrik in Kaza. This act of solidarity among the cyclists not only underscored the communal spirit of the expedition but also played a significant role in spreading the message of electoral participation among the local populace.

Maneesh Garg lauded the cyclists for their significant contribution towards encouraging electoral participation. He highlighted how their efforts were instrumental in motivating people to engage with the democratic process actively. In addition to their cycling feat, Jaspreet and Kshitij took a hands-on approach by distributing thousands of invitation cards prepared by the state election department to voters across different locations they visited.

The cycling expedition was flagged off from Shimla on May 14 with a clear objective: to enhance voter turnout at 414 polling stations that witnessed low participation in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Through their arduous journey and commitment to raising awareness, Jaspreet Pal and his co-rider have indeed set an inspiring example for others to follow.
