Cybercrime Report 2024: WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram Top List Of Fraud Platforms
Cybercrime Report 2024: A recent report by the Union Home Ministry has revealed alarming statistics about cyber fraud across popular platforms. WhatsApp emerged as the leading platform for online scams, followed closely by Telegram and Instagram. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, a staggering 43,797 complaints of cyber fraud were reported via WhatsApp. Telegram and Instagram followed suit with 22,680 and 19,800 complaints, respectively, emphasizing the growing challenge of internet security on widely-used platforms.

Cybercrime Tactics: Google Ads and "Pig Butchering Scams"
The Ministry’s annual report for 2023-24 sheds light on evolving cybercrime tactics. Fraudsters are now exploiting Google services, particularly its advertisement platform, to launch scams originating from outside India. Among these, the "Pig Butchering Scam" (or Investment Scam) has gained notoriety.
This scam involves sophisticated money-laundering operations targeting vulnerable individuals such as unemployed youths, housewives, and students. Victims are tricked into investing significant sums of money, often borrowing funds, only to face devastating financial losses.
Collaborative Efforts to Combat Cybercrime
Recognizing the scale of the issue, the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) has partnered with tech giants like Google and Facebook. This collaboration focuses on:
- Flagging Threats: Identifying and targeting dubious digital lending apps.
- Stopping Misuse: Tackling fraudulent use of Google Firebase domains.
- Shutting Scams: Disabling Facebook-sponsored ads promoting illegal apps.
The shared intelligence between I4C and these tech companies is a proactive step in mitigating cyber threats.
Strengthening Cybersecurity Through Training
In addition to partnerships, the I4C is dedicated to fortifying the country’s criminal justice system against cyber threats. Key initiatives include:
- Capacity building for law enforcement agencies, forensic examiners, prosecutors, and judges.
- Providing specialized training in cybersecurity, digital forensics, and cybercrime investigations.
These measures aim to enhance the preparedness and responsiveness of the judicial system to the dynamic nature of cybercrime.
The Way Forward: Prioritizing Cybersecurity
The surge in cyber fraud across platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Instagram calls for urgent and comprehensive cybersecurity measures. Collaborative efforts between I4C and tech giants, along with advanced training initiatives, are crucial steps toward securing digital platforms. As these platforms remain integral to daily life, ensuring their security is paramount for protecting users worldwide.
