Cuttack Hospital House Surgeons Announce Cease Work from Wednesday
About 250 house surgeons at SCB Medical College and Hospital have initiated an indefinite cease work from Wednesday. They are demanding action against nursing staff who allegedly mistreated them. The hospital superintendent, Dr. Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra, remains optimistic about resolving the issue amicably.

The conflict began on Monday night with an argument between a doctor and a nursing officer in the hospital's medicine department. This minor dispute escalated when other doctors and nurses got involved. By Tuesday morning, local newspapers had reported the incident, further inflaming tensions.
Protests and Accusations
House surgeons accused the nursing staff of spreading falsehoods and tarnishing the hospital's reputation. They protested in front of the hospital superintendent's office, demanding an apology from the nursing association and a halt to misleading media statements. In response, nursing staff also staged their own protest.
Dr. Mishra suggested that the heavy workload and staff shortages might have contributed to the clash between house surgeons and nursing staff. He hopes for a peaceful resolution to the matter.
Cease Work Announcement
During a meeting with the hospital committee formed to address the issue, tensions escalated further. Consequently, house surgeons declared they would cease work starting Wednesday morning. "We will provide emergency services only and boycott general duties," stated Dr. Bibhas Kumar, Secretary of the House Surgeons.
The situation has drawn significant attention, with both sides standing firm on their demands. The house surgeons' protest highlights ongoing issues within the hospital's working environment that need addressing to prevent future conflicts.
Efforts are underway to mediate between the conflicting parties and restore normalcy at SCB Medical College and Hospital. The outcome of these discussions remains crucial for maintaining harmony among medical staff.
The indefinite cease work by house surgeons underscores deeper systemic issues that require immediate attention to ensure smooth hospital operations and patient care.
