Campaigning Concludes for 43 Jharkhand Assembly Seats Ahead of November Elections
The campaign for the first phase of Jharkhand's assembly elections concluded on Monday. Voting for 43 out of 81 seats is scheduled for November 13. Prominent leaders from both the NDA and INDIA blocs, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, actively participated in the campaign to support their party candidates.

A total of 1.37 crore voters are eligible to cast their votes in this phase. Among the 683 candidates contesting, there are 609 men, 73 women, and one third-gender candidate. Chief Electoral Officer K Ravi Kumar provided these details.
Polling Arrangements and Security
For the first phase, 15,344 polling stations have been established. Of these, 12,716 are in rural areas, while 2,628 are in urban locations. On Monday, polling personnel were dispatched to 194 stations, with the remaining 31 to be covered on Tuesday.
Voting will take place from 7 am to 5 pm on November 13. However, at 950 booths, voting will conclude at 4 pm. Those in line by that time will still be allowed to vote. Women will manage operations at 1,152 polling stations, and differently-abled individuals will oversee 24 booths.
Campaign Highlights and Issues
The NDA focused its campaign on issues like infiltration and corruption. Meanwhile, the INDIA bloc emphasised tribal rights and welfare concerns. Prime Minister Modi led a significant roadshow in Ranchi on Sunday, drawing large crowds.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other BJP leaders campaigned extensively. JMM's executive president Hemant Soren and his wife Kalpana Soren also addressed several rallies.
Election Context and Historical Data
In the previous assembly elections of 2019, JMM secured 30 seats while BJP won 25 seats, a decrease from their earlier tally of 37 in 2014. The JMM-Congress-RJD alliance achieved a majority with a total of 47 seats.
The current assembly has a strength of 74 members. The ruling coalition led by JMM consists of 44 members: JMM holds 26 seats, Congress has 17, and RJD has one seat.
Legal Issues and Allegations
A significant factor influencing this election is the arrest of Hemant Soren by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He was detained in connection with a money laundering case related to alleged land fraud but was later released on bail. The ruling alliance claims this arrest was politically motivated.
Since the Model Code of Conduct was enforced, authorities have seized illegal materials and cash worth Rs 179.14 crore. Additionally, there have been 54 cases registered for violations of this code up until Monday.
The upcoming elections are crucial for both alliances as they strive to secure a majority in the state assembly. Voter turnout and public sentiment towards key issues will play a decisive role in determining the outcome.
