India Downgrades Diplomatic Relations with Pakistan Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

India has taken decisive steps to downgrade its diplomatic relations with Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. Measures include expelling Pakistani military attaches, suspending the Indus Water Treaty, and closing the Attari land-transit post. These actions come in response to the cross-border links identified in the attack that claimed 26 lives.

India Lowers Diplomatic Ties with Pakistan

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, convened to finalise these retaliatory measures. The meeting aimed to address the recent attack and ensure heightened security vigilance. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that both countries will reduce their high commission staff from 55 to 30 by May 1.

Diplomatic Ties and Security Measures

The CCS has decided to close existing diplomatic channels, further straining bilateral relations. Misri stated that those responsible for the Pahalgam attack will face justice, and their supporters will be held accountable. The CCS was briefed on the incident's cross-border connections.

India declared Pakistani defence, military, naval, and air advisors in New Delhi as Persona Non Grata, giving them a week to leave. Similarly, India will withdraw its own defence advisors from Islamabad. Five support staff from both high commissions will also be withdrawn.

Impact on Travel and Water Treaty

The Integrated Check Post at Attari, the sole operational land crossing between India and Pakistan, is now closed. Pakistani nationals are barred from travelling to India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme, with previously issued visas now void.

The Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 is suspended until Pakistan ceases its support for cross-border terrorism. Misri mentioned that those who crossed into India with valid endorsements can return via Attari before May 1.

Global Support and Condemnation

The CCS condemned the Pahalgam attack, which killed 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen, leaving many injured. The committee expressed condolences to victims' families and wished for quick recovery of the injured. Global governments have shown strong support and condemned this act of terror.

The CCS acknowledged international solidarity against terrorism, appreciating sentiments reflecting zero tolerance for such acts. The attack followed successful elections in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting its progress towards economic growth.

Commitment to Justice

The CCS reviewed security measures and instructed forces to remain vigilant. It resolved to bring attackers to justice and hold their sponsors accountable. As seen with Tahawwur Rana's extradition, India remains committed to pursuing those involved in terrorism.

India's firm stance aims to ensure accountability for acts of terror while maintaining national security. The government continues its efforts to address cross-border terrorism effectively.
