Education Crisis in India: Fear Forces Students Abroad, Says Congress MP

Congress MP Anto Antony addressed the Lok Sabha on Thursday, highlighting a crisis in India's education sector. He claimed that a pervasive atmosphere of fear is compelling students to leave the country. Antony participated in a debate on the Education Ministry's budget demands, stressing that this year's budget lacks proposals or vision to tackle these issues.

Crisis in Education: Students Flee India

Antony pointed out that India does not have a single university in the world's top 100, which should be alarming for a nation with such a large population. He suggested that the government should have allocated funds to improve at least a few institutions to help them achieve top rankings soon. "Today, Education in India is in a deep crisis, it is facing several problems and this year's budget has no proposal or vision to address these concerns," he said.

Impact of Fear on Education

The MP from Pathanamthitta in Kerala echoed Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's concerns about an atmosphere of fear affecting various sectors, including education. "The atmosphere of fear that Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi has been talking about which prevails in all walks of life in the country also impacts the education sector," Antony added.

Antony described educational campuses as gardens filled with diverse flowers, representing new generations transcending differences in caste, religion, language, and culture. He urged not to destroy this social fabric with communal divisions. "Please do not destroy this wonderful social fabric of the country with communal divisions," he pleaded.

Brain Drain Concerns

He also mentioned the increasing number of Indian students migrating abroad for education, with figures rising from over 7 lakh in 2022 to 8.5 lakh in 2023. This migration leads to brain drain and loss of human capital. "This atmosphere of fear which exists in the education sector is forcing students to flee from the country," Antony said.

Antony attributed this situation to the ruling party and its affiliates, holding them responsible for creating an environment that drives students away. "One of the major implications of migration due to education opportunities is brain drain which leads to loss of human capital, the ruling party and its affiliates are responsible for this grave situation," he stated.

BJP's Response

BJP MP Pratap Chandra Sarangi from Balasore countered Antony's claims by calling the Union Budget for 2024-25 revolutionary. He questioned the opposition's stance in the House. "Those who insulted the Constitution come to the House holding it...those who run Bharat Jodo have divided the country several times," Sarangi remarked.

Sarangi's comments highlighted a stark contrast between the ruling party's view and that of the opposition regarding the state of education and other national issues. The debate underscored differing perspectives on how best to address India's educational challenges.

The discussion in Lok Sabha brought attention to critical issues within India's education system, reflecting broader political disagreements on how to resolve them effectively.
