Covid Subvariant JN.1 In Kerala: How Dangerous Is It? Know All About New Omicron Subvariant
India has registered a confirmed case of JN.1 subvariant of Omicron, which is leading to a fresh spike in COVID-19 cases in the US, China and Singapore.
The sample from a 79-year-old woman had returned a positive result in an RT-PCR test on November 18. As per the officials, the woman had mild symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI) and had recovered from COVID-19.

It may be recalled that an Indian traveller was also detected with JN.1 sub-variant in Singapore. The person hailed from Tamil Nadu's Tiruchirapalli district and had travelled to Singapore on October 25.
What Is JN.1 Variant?
First detected in September, the cases JN.1 subvariant is now reported in at least 12 countries, including the US. Like the other newer variants, JN.1 is part of the omicron family.
Scientists say that JN.1 is a descendant of the BA.2.86, also known as 'Pirola'.
Is it dangerous? Should we worry?
The primary cause for concern surrounding JN.1 revolves around its suspected attributes. Health officials are apprehensive about its potential for increased transmissibility and the possibility of enhanced capabilities to evade the immune system, which has raised concerns within the scientific community. Importantly, no conclusive evidence indicates that JN.1 results in more severe illness compared to other prevalent variants.
There is a trend suggesting that newer variants like JN.1 may exhibit a higher frequency of gastrointestinal symptoms, including abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Although this observation necessitates further validation through comprehensive studies, it underscores the dynamic nature of COVID-19 and emphasizes the importance of closely monitoring variant-specific symptom profiles.
What Are Its Symptoms?
The specific symptoms associated with JN.1 infection compared to other variants are currently unknown. Generally, COVID-19 symptoms appear to be consistent across different variants. They are:
- Sore throat
- Congestion
- Runny nose
- Cough
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Muscle aches
- Fever or chills
- Loss of sense of taste or smell
However, the types of symptoms and how severe they are usually depend more on a person's immunity and overall health rather than which variant causes the infection, as per the CDC.
Are The Vaccines Effective?
An updated booster shot can help keep you protected against JN.1 and other variants.
