In August this year too, Nitesh had ranted against Gujaratis on Twitter saying, "The number of Gujaratis has grown significantly over the past few years. Out of the total 36 constituencies in Mumbai, 13 seats are such where Gujarati votes are deciders. At the same time, Gujaratis don't allow others to buy flats in their towers, especially those eating non-vegetarian food. This has resulted in the rise of Gujarati populace."
"We are not against Gujaratis who want to remain in harmony, but are against those who want to take control of the city," he had said.
He had also tweeted, "Veg skies, veg hospitals, veg housing societies ... soon veg Mumbai! Either Gujjus go back to Gujarat or they turn Mumbai into Gujarat ... Red alert."
His father, Narayan Rane had already paid a hefty price by raking up the same issue, when he faced an embarrassing defeat from his home constituency of Kudal in Sindhudurg district, in the recently held assembly polls.
Last year in December, he was arrested for vandalising a toll plaza in Dhargal near Goa, but was released on bail within 24 hours.
