Gujarat, Tamil Nadu Pharma Companies Found Manufacturing Contaminated Syrups

In a recent development, samples of syrups manufactured by two pharmaceutical companies based in Gujarat and Tamil Nadu have been found to contain contaminants ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. These substances were previously detected in certain syrups that were allegedly linked to deaths in the Gambia, Uzbekistan and Cameroon since last year, according to officials.

Contaminated Drug Samples

Pharmaceutical Contamination

The contaminated samples are among 48 drugs declared as not of standard quality and spurious by the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). A total of 1,166 samples were tested in August. The tainted samples included batches from Norris Medicines Limited based in Gujarat and Fourrts India Laboratories located in Tamil Nadu.

Gujarat-based Norris Medicines Limited

Samples from a batch of cough syrup and another batch of anti-allergy syrup produced by Norris Medicines Limited contained 0.118 per cent ethylene glycol and 0.171 per cent ethylene glycol respectively along with 0.243 per cent diethylene glycol. Following this discovery, the company was asked to suspend production at its Ankleshwar plant a month ago.

Tamil Nadu-based Fourrts India Laboratories

Similarly, three batches of COLD OUT syrup manufactured by Fourrts India Laboratories also tested positive for both contaminants -- ethylene glycol at 1.9 per cent and diethylene glycol undisclosed percentage levels. This particular medicine is commonly used for relieving nasal congestion, runny nose, fever etc., making it widely consumed during flu seasons.

Implications for Public Health

This revelation raises serious concerns about public health safety given that these medicines are likely consumed on a large scale across the country due to their wide range of applications spanning from common cold relief to allergy management. The presence of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol in these medicines poses a significant risk to the health of individuals consuming them, especially considering their alleged links to deaths in other countries.

These findings underscore the importance of stringent quality control measures in pharmaceutical production. It is crucial for regulatory bodies like CDSCO to continue testing and monitoring drug samples regularly, ensuring that manufacturers adhere strictly to safety standards.

In conclusion, this incident serves as a wake-up call not only for pharmaceutical companies but also consumers who must be vigilant about the drugs they consume. It's essential that all stakeholders - from manufacturers to regulators and consumers - take collective responsibility towards ensuring the safety and efficacy of medicines available on the market. Further investigation into how such contaminants found their way into these syrups will be critical in preventing similar incidents in future.
