'Consensus Important To Run Country, Intend To Take Everyone Along': PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today stressed on the importance of "consensus" in governance during his address ahead of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha. He emphasised that while a parliamentary majority is crucial, true governance requires the principle of "taking everyone along."

This marks a notable shift from his remarks in 2019, where he highlighted the BJP's absolute majority and took a jab at the opposition's reduced numbers.

This time, the BJP did not secure an absolute majority, winning 240 seats out of 543, prompting Modi to strike a more conciliatory tone. He underscored that the ruling alliance's actions would focus on inclusivity and cooperation. Modi also urged the Opposition to avoid "disappointing" the public, emphasising the need for debate and vigilance over "drama and disputes".

Modi's speech also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, describing it as a "black stain" on Indian democracy and vowing that such an event should never be repeated. The Emergency, imposed by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, remains a contentious chapter in Indian history, reported The Print.

Furthermore, Modi highlighted that his third consecutive term, achieved by his government, parallels the record set by Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister.

"By choosing a government for the third term, the people have also stamped their seal of approval in its intent, policies and its dedication to work for their welfare.... As a result, our responsibility also goes up three times. I want to assure the people of country that we will put in three times more efforts," Modi said.

The address was attended by key ministers, including Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who has been engaging with Opposition leaders to ensure smoother parliamentary proceedings, a stark contrast to the contentious sessions of the previous Lok Sabha marked by frequent disagreements and suspensions.

Modi also called for consensus and cooperation, which interestingly, reflects the political dynamics of his current term, underscoring the need for broader support and collaboration in the legislative process.

"In the past 10 years, we tried to establish a tradition and we believe that to run a government, a majority is needed, but to run a country, agreement is essential. And that's why our efforts will be to serve the country with everyone's consent and by taking everyone together," Modi said.
