Sonia Gandhi slams Modi govt, raises concern over raise of self-vigilantism

Congress must defend liberty and freedom of individuals and institutions and accused the BJP government of encouraging those who flout the law and unleash oppression, said Congress President Sonia Gandhi at a special CWC meeting here to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement.

The Congress party must always remain on the frontline in defence of liberty and numerous values associated with liberty, and the institutions that go with it. We must never bow before those who assault the liberty of the individual and of society," she said.

The meeting is being held just a day before the special sitting of the two Houses of Parliament to mark the anniversary of Quit India Day. The Indian National Congress had launched the Quit India campaign in 1942 that called for India's immediate independence from Britain.

The CWC passed two resolutions on the 75th anniversary of the Quit India movement and rededicated itself to uphold and defend the idea of India as envisioned by the leaders of the freedom movement. It also resolved to fight back and defeat the forces which seek to destroy the country's heritage.

Rahul skipped the meeting as he was down with a viral infection and Sonia chaired it.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former defence minister AK Antony, senior minister Ghulam Nabi Azad along with several senior ministers are present at the meet.
